| May 1999 JESUS OUR ALL IN ALL Colossians could be titled "Christ Our All". It shows the greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ in every area of the Christian faith. I read of a woman engaged to the great composer, Mozart. She broke off the engagement and when asked about her former betrothed she said, "I saw nothing of his genius, only a little man". Isaiah predicted the same would be true of Christ in His incarnation. "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him."(Isa 53:2). There are some who look to the Christian faith and see nothing but confinement to a set of standards or a philosophy of trying to do good. They fail to see that Christianity is a lot more, Christianity is Christ. It involves His person, work and promise. Paul in Colossians chapter 2, shares four areas in which Christ is unsurpassed. JESUS CHRIST IS THE FOUNT OF WISDOM The reference of "In whom" are God the Father and His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Note, "all" wisdom and understanding are housed in them, the treasure box or storehouse. It is our relationship to Jesus that unlocks the key to understanding, not only for things present, but also for things to come. Paul said in (Eph 3:8), he preached the "unsearchable riches" of Christ. Although we will never be able to fully comprehend all wisdom, we know that through Christ, the scripture and our resolve to practice what He reveals, we can have understanding. The Bible tells us that believers have "the mind of Christ" (1Cor 2:16). JESUS CHRIST IS THE FOUNDATION OF FAITH Receiving Christ, walking in Him, rooted in Him and built up in Him is the way to establish our faith. Jesus Christ is the one foundation on which all is built. No other foundation can be laid that would please the Father (1 Cor 3:11). All who build on the foundation of Christ receive the reward, but all built outside of His foundation will be burned as wood, hay and stubble. Are you on the foundation? Are you building on Christ the Solid Rock? JESUS CHRIST IS THE FULNESS OF GOD The "fullness" here is completeness. All that can be said of God the Father can be said of God the Son. He is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and eternal. The "Godhead" refers to Jesus divine nature in its entirety. We cannot look to Jesus as a part of God, but as all of God. How can we understand such truth? It is only by His revelation. The scripture is clear, Jesus has all the attributes, all the divine qualities and all the character of God. Our relationship to Him through faith makes us part of His body (Eph 1:22, 23) and places us in the family of God (John 1:12) JESUS CHRIST IS THE FORGIVER OF SIN Outside of Christ we are dead in our sins. Only by believing in Him can we be "quickened", made alive together with Him and receive the forgiveness of all our trespasses. Jesus alone forgives sin. His coming to earth was to accomplish the work of salvation. He came to pay the penalty for our sin. He died in our place. His resurrection proves the acceptance of His sacrifice as payment in full for all who believe. "Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification." (Rom 4:25). It is obvious who Paul says is the answer to all mens need. Jesus is the Fount of Wisdom, the Foundation of Faith, the Fullness of God and the Forgiver of sin. Do you know Him? Have you confessed Him? "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Rom 10:9,10). In a home not far from then Queen Victoria a woman was asked in the Queen ever visited. "Yes " she answered. She was then asked if the King of Kings ever visited her. "No" she answered. "He lives here in my heart". Is Christ living in your heart today? Is He the Master of the house? God bless. |
