GOD’S WORK FOR BELIEVERS

"Now he which establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God; Who has also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts." (2 Cor 1:21,22)

When the great Christian and scientist, Michael Farraday was dying, he was asked about his speculations of life after death. He answered, "Speculations, I know nothing of speculations. I’m resting on certainties, ‘I know that my Redeemer lives, and because He lives, I shall live also.’" How can Christians have such confidence? This passage of scripture answers the question by showing us what God is doing for believers:

HE ANCHORS THE BELIEVER’S LIFE
"He which establishes us with you"

When God establishes believers, He anchors them to a true and lasting foundation, (1 Cor 3:11), "Other foundation can no man lay that that which is laid, which is the Lord Jesus Christ." Jesus is our Foundation. It will never fail. It is upon this foundation the believer can confidently rest. In the world there may be turmoil, doubt and uncertainty, but in the Lord Jesus Christ, there is peace with complete confidence in His care. When we put our trust in the Lord Jesus, He is faithful to confirm every promise God has ever made. This is the sure anchor for our soul. Are you resting on the eternal foundation of Jesus? He will never fail.

HE ANOINTS THE BELIEVER WITH HIS SPIRIT
"and has anointed us."

Anointing in the scripture is often associated with the healing of the sick, the burial of the dead, or separation to a divine purpose. Here it is an out pouring of God’s Spirit in our lives to consecrate and set us apart to Himself. It gives us understanding and guidance in His will (1 John 2:20, 27) says, "We have an unction of the Holy One and know all things." It provides confirmation of God’s work in and for us, (Rom 8:16) tells us, "the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God." How privileged we are to have the sure foundation and the sure knowledge of God’s handiwork in our lives.

HE ASSURES THE BELIEVER’S POSITION
"Who has also sealed us"

A seal in scripture was the mark of ownership. We are not our own, we are bought with a price. But, not only is it a seal of ownership, it is also a seal of identification. We are His and He is ours. (Gal 2:20), I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me…" (1 John 5:12), "He that hath the Son hath life…" Note this truth found in Ephesians. (Eph 1:13) it says, "I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." That took place the day I put my trust in Jesus. It goes on to say in (Eph 4:30), "I am sealed for the day of redemption." Think of this wonderful truth, He seals us the day we trust Jesus Christ as Savior and that seal guarantees our redemption and our place with Him in eternity.

HE AUTHENTICATES THE BELIEVER’S HOPE
"and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts."

An earnest is a pledge. The Spirit’s presence in the believer’s life is His pledge and our foretaste of that which is to come. God’s promise of eternal life and God’s preparation for us to enjoy that life are both found in the presence of the Spirit in us. How wonderful will Heaven be? Only a small part has been told. True, we experience many blessings in our earthly walk with Jesus, but just imagine what eternity will be like. The Holy Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance, (Eph 1:14) "Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.". We are co-heirs together with Christ.

Years ago, my wife and I attended a Boat Regatta with hundreds of others. In order to get a better view, many spectators stood on a peer jutting out from the bank. Suddenly, the peer gave way, and I watched in disbelief as they were throw into the water. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the incident provided a valuable lesson. You can’t trust or take for granted the structures of man. However it is just the opposite with God. We can have absolute confidence in Him.

We have an Anchor, an Anointing, an Assurance and an Authenticity of what the future holds for us. All this is found in God’s work for us. Have you experienced this confidence? Are you absolutely sure of your eternity? If not, today, ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sin and come into your life as Savior. Start enjoying the promises of God, which cannot fail. God bless.
